Pine MountainHello again from Pine Mountain. Labor day has come and gone and it is September already. Fall is in the air. Soon it will be winter. Where has this year gone? Here at the ranch it will soon be time to take the beef cattle to market. I have been stocking my wood shop so I can make furniture this winter. I also have been stocking up on seeds for my winter greenhouse garden. I have recaulked the windows so the winter winds and snow will stay outside.
This week our story is about our little community of Pine Mountain Club. First we have our usual sections of Alternative energy, Easy Cash, Nutrition, Traveling, and Adventure.
Alternative Energy
First for those of you that have just joined us, here at the ranch, power is supplied by 2 wind turbines and a water turbine. We also have a few solar panels that charge up a battery bank. Pine Mountain Club
Deep in a valley in Kern County California is the little mountain community of Pine Mountain Club. It is at approximately the same elevation as Denver , Colorado. The community sits on the San Andreas fault about 20 miles west of Interstate 5. One of these days the community could get shook up but since it is a rural community the damage would be a lot less than in a major city like Los Angeles. The population of our little mountain community is growing and one of these days we may even pass the 2,000 number.
Valley Life
Life here in the valley moves at a slower more relaxed pace than in the city. We have some ranches and some retirees. We have many vacation cabins. We have a gas station, a grocery store, a hardware store, and a restaurant. Upstairs above the restaurant is the pub called Madd Bailey’s. We have a golf course and a lake (actually a large pond).
Entertainment
We now have our own radio show called “Bruce on the Loose”. It is most Saturdays from 9 A. M. until noon. The broadcast goes out to the community at 87.9 FM and is hosted by Bruce Popkin. We have a dance or concert every Saturday night at the Pine Mountain Clubhouse from 5:30 PM until 7:30 PM. This Saturday it is Kareoke. After 7:30 PM you can go to Madd Bailey’s.
Crime
Our little mountain community has a very low crime rate. While we do have a security patrol, most of the crimes in the community are committed by the animals. When the condors were released in 1999, a few of them took up residence on the roof of the clubhouse. They would swoop down and attack the windshield wipers on cars. Later they became so bold as to peck their way through a screen door on a house then enter and wreak havoc in the room. One man heard a noise upstairs in his house and found 9 condors tearing his bedroom apart. They had chewed through his screen door.
The other animal that cause problems in our community is the bear. The bears like the seeds in bird feeders. It makes a snack for them. The best procedure is to only use the bird feeders from November to March.
Our Community
Pine Mountain Club is civilization in the wilderness. We have the Chumash wilderness to the south and the Los Padres National Forest to the west. It is just the way we like it and hopefully it will stay wild and inviting.
Pine Mountain Evening
I am relaxing in my easy chair by the fireplace. Squeekers my African Grey parrot is sitting on his perch eating peanuts. We just finished watching another episode of Enterprise, a sci fi series from 2005. Tonight my sample coffee from www.coffeefool.com is Fool's house American. Lightly roasted beans give you that fresh coffee taste. I have finished my coffee now and I am ready to get some sleep. I put Squeekers in his cage turn off the gas fireplace and head upstairs to bed. Good night all see you next week.
